Hey! hows it going? i was sorry to hear about your knee, i hope it gets better. i have been doing great! it is a lot of fun being out here. i want to send you some pictures but i dont have a usb cord for my camera, so im not sure how im going to do it. i hope you got my email form last week, they said there were some problems with the email i might send it again just in case. anyway church was great this week we had like 39 people come instead of 29, so it was on the upswing. we have one investagator there which was great. we have to good investigators right now, Abrahm and Rosa. on pdays i havent done much sight seeing because we are so far outside of santiago. i dont know if i told you but we are in this little town called batuco. the little branch here is small but i plan on making it grow, we still do a lot of reactivation with the inactives. i wanted to thank grandma and grandpa for the letters. it was great to hear from them, and am glad to hear they are doing well. it is still hard to understand the people here but i am starting to pick it up better. they speak very fast and do not pronounce the s at the end of words, and have a lot of slang. the food is good i am getting used to it. we ate with a member, but it got to expensive so we cant eat with her any more. but we found someone else to go to that will do it for free. because we are so far outside of santiago the food is more expensive. we have also had to go into santiago everyday this past week because my comp Elder Ojeda has had some medical problems with his skin, and that gets expensive also. but thats alright because i have gotten to see some of the city as well. it has been very cold here especially at night, and it rained last nnight, but i am trying to enjoy it because i hear it getts very hot here in the summer. they have this thing here called empanadas which are really good, but i eat a lot of beans and rice. the people in my area are very poor, actually the santiago North mission is the poorest mission in santiago. but thats ok because humble people are more receptive to the gospel. by the way it takes like ten to 15 days for letters and packages to get here. i hope the Dentons and the Bloomquists are doing well, the boat trip sounded very eventful. well i dont have much else, i will try to send the email from last week as well just in case you didnt get it.love you all and will talk to you next monday.

Dear Nelson Family,

It was a great pleasure to welcome your son to our mission. He arrived in good health, is enthusiastic, and anxious to begin missionary work here in the Chile Santiago North mission. I have interviewed him carefully and find him well prepared, with a strong testimony, and a good beginning foundation in the Spanish language. I feel honored to be his mission president and know that the Lord has prepared many people here to receive the testimony of the restoration he bears. Sister May and I will treat him as our own son.

Your son will look forward to your weekly letters of encouragement and support. E-mail is a great way to communicate with him as he communicates with me by e-mail weekly as well. If you prefer to send letters, the church pouch system is the safest method. The pouch mail comes several times per month and is delivered to the mission office, where we either carry it ourselves, or send it with missionaries to your son, as soon as possible. You can also send letters and packages directly to the mission office. The address of our mission office is as follows.

Misión Chile Santiago
NorteForestal 2680,
Oficina 32 Cajita 18
Conchalí, Santiago
Chile

Thank you for all you have done to prepare your son for him mission. Sister May and I will do everything in our power to help him have a wonderful and productive mission.

Sincerely yours,

Michael E. May

HI!! hows it going. well i made it! i guess you didnt get that first email that i send on the day that i got here. it is crazy here. i am in this small town out side of Santiago called Batuco. my comps name is Elder Ojeda. he is from Utah but his dad is mexican. he knew spanish and english before he got here. he is great a hard worker a good teacher and a laid back guy. well i cant understand a word that is being said here but thats ok im getting better. the 18 of sept. is the chile independence day or something like that. so is has been crazy here. people here are all drunk and are always asking me for money because im white. the members here in the one ward in all of batuco are great except there are hardly any. on sunday there was only 28 people! there are alot of inactives. we spend a lot of time doing permaneced which is like reactivation. it is a program an chile that they made because of the problem they have with people falling way. well i dont have much time and a lot to tell you. as for letters and packages you send them to this address: Chile Santiago North Mission, 2680 forestal 32, conchali chile. i think it takes about 15 days or less and is safe for the most part. i actually need a few things if you dont mind; a nice jump rope; a usb cord for my camra( i cant send you pictures untill i get it, because i will send it on the comp) and then a list of birthdays, addresses, emails and anything like that. well i can email anyone that i want but i dont have much time so i will try and email more people next week. i got you emails and letters, thank you so much for them. i am sure i forgot something, but am out of time love you talk to later!

September 12, 2009 - New Pictures!!

Jessie,
I thought I should send you what pics I have. Most are random. Some of the elder in my district are crazy. Anyway, I deleted most of the really silly ones. Mostly there are just pics with me and my teachers. The blonde one with the braces is my favorite. He has been a great example to me and I have learned the most from him. So I love you and thank you for your support! I'm writing this on Saturday as we are packing for Monday. It's kind of like another P-Day. You will most likely get this way after I talk to you on the phone on Monday.

Love, Elder Tyler Nelson

Mom got an email from Sister May. Elder Nelson has made it safely to Chile and has begun the work. As you'll see below, Hermana May has shared the address to the Chile North Mission Blog! It is really fun to look through. I'll keep that address here on this blog over there ------->
On the Chile Blog, I saw that Elder Nelson's companion is: Elder Ojeda! You can see pictures of all of the companions as they are meeting, etc. on the blog. I'm excited to hear more from Elder Nelson next Monday to see what it has been like this week.

Dear Parents of the great missionaries of the Chile Santiago North Mission,

Your sons all arrived here safely to the Chile Santiago North Mission! We love them already; as they are so easy to love. They come with high hopes, and great enthusiasm to share their testimony, speak Spanish, and be their very best. We are impressed with their faithful and happy attitudes, and are so grateful that the Lord has sent them to serve here. We will take good care of them.

We reminded them of Doctrine and Covenants 128:19, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet…bringing glad tidings of good things,” like the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We took a photo of their nice, new, shiny shoes which will soon be worn out in the service of the Master, and these missionaries will be walking in His footsteps as they come to know Him in their individual lives. What a blessing for us all. The people here in Chile will welcome your sons and will also love them, because they are messengers of the Lord, coming to serve them.

President May interviewed each one individually, and then after prayer and inspiration, determined which trainer would be assigned to each new missionary. Our trainers are the most obedient, humble missionaries, and we know that they will teach and guide your Elder here, with Christ like patience, love and understanding. The office elders had a simple orientation, helping them to learn how to adjust to the food, money, habits, customs, and legal requirements here in Santiago.

Please know that their Preparation days are on Monday, and they will be allowed to email to you only then. They can write letters on that day also, and you may write to your missionary by email, but they also LOVE to receive letters by mail too. This is the mission office address, where you can send letters and packages directly, where they are then distributed weekly to the missionaries during their zone training classes, usually held on Tuesdays:

We also have a mission blog, http://chilesantiagonorthmission.blogspot.com/, where we are constantly updating and adding new articles, photos, President’s letters, etc, you may visit. Please click on the small thumbnail photos of your sons, and they will enlarge for better viewing. This blog will demonstrate some of the conferences, activities, projects our missionaries are attending. We do NOT allow our missionaries to go to the blog, until after they finish their mission, so it is only for parents, friends and our past missionaries. Thank you for sharing your sons and daughters with us here in the Chile Santiago North Mission. You will be blessed in their absence, and we respect and admire you for your offering. This is the Lord's Church, and He loves His missionaries!

Lovingly,
Hermana May

Elder Nelson has arrived in Chile....

.....we hope!!

The family got to talk to Elder Nelson on Monday September 14, 2009. He is doing great and had lots of good things to say. He sounds more "mature" in the short 9 weeks he has been gone. It is amazing to see how much change the MTC has on these missionaries. They are truly on the errand of the Lord. He flew out of Salt Lake, UT at about 3 and arrived in Texas. From Texas, he took the red eye to Chile, where he arrived at 7:00 am. He is traveling with 18 other Elders to Chile, though not all of them are to the North mission. He says that once he gets off the plane in Chile, he'll meet his Mission President and trainer and then get to work!! He is a little nervous about being in a new country and meeting his trainer, but he is still very excited and positive. He already really misses the MTC and feels like he's entered a strange and harsh world. Elder Nelson has felt the prayers of everyone. Thank you for yours thoughts and support. Keep posted: Elder Nelson says he will have a lot of exciting things to share now that he is in Chile, he is sure. Hopefully we will hear from him this week (he thinks his P-Day is Monday).

Hey Everyone! hows it going? i am doing great thank you for all the letters and emails, it means alot. well its getting closer. Sept 14 is just around the corner. its a little scary but well faith and fear cannot coexsist so right now i am trying to get rid of my fear. i know that the lord will help me with what needs to be said. i am getting very excited! i am a little sick of the food and the routine here, but i know i will miss it when i am gone. the spanish is coming slowly, i will say though i know a lot more than i thought i knew. when we get tought by the younger districts that come in (because we are now the oldest district in the zone) i am always supprised by how much i do know. just to let you know my roommate is doing great, he just got his staples out of his head. i finished Jesus the Christ on monday, it has been a great experience reading it. now i get to go back and really study it. my favorite chapters were the last three, expecially the long night of the apostasy. it has been great and i really recommend it to whoever wants to reads it. Happy birthday Mom! thanks for everything you do, i dont have much i can give you for your birthday but this, that i love you and see what you do for your kids and me. the great example that you are to me, you are a rock of strangth that i lean on every day. i see the relationship that you and dad share and want that same kind of loving relationship when i get married, i just want you to know that i am working as hard as i can here and want so very much to make you guys proud. sorry but i dont have much time today, just want to let you know that i love you all and am very grateful for your support. thank you for everything, i know the gospel is true and that Jesus Christ is my Savior. the Book of Mormon is true and by reading it we can come closer to Christ.
